Demented Soul: Nadashen Forgets To Claim Nobel Peace Price

The Prophet has spoken again. Please listen to this if you can and have a tough stomach.

B. Nadesan, the political head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) Sunday said the Tigers had "plenty of evidences" to document that the Sri Lankan government of Mahinda Rajapaksa was "intentionally directing attacks against civilians," committing war crimes and crimes against humanity when asked to comment on the recent statement issued by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The UN High Commissioner had warned that the actions by the warring parties could amount to war crimes.

Not carrying a passage outlining Sun God’s qualifications to demand Nobel Peace Price for Son God, in the statement above, may be an indication that Nadeshan is suffering from an acute case of dementia. Since these days his tongue has to work in overdrive and overtime, his tongue may have momentarily become over tight. Or is it more likely that this is Dead Soul Syndrome caused by prolonged activity of tongue and moral acrobatics? Such prolong soul gymnastics of foulness is known to create malignant deformities in one’s soul. Is this dead soul syndrome the reason why he has failed to be consistent by complementing his war crime-genocide accusations against the Government with Nobel Peace Price demand for his Supreme one?

Any way even when a beast is in distress we help it. So I would like to extend him a helping hand by drafting a letter that he can articulate his claim for Nobel Peace Price for the True God.

Dear Nobel Peace Price Committee:

For a long time Nobel Peace Price Committee has been committing an oversight of unimaginable magnitude by not granting Nobel Peace Price for our Sun God. I am convinced that this is just an oversight since we do not see any outpouring outrage from the world for our war crime accusations against ‘legitimately”-what legitimacy; just grab a bomb then the power- is the only way to go about being sole representative- elected Sri Lankan President for pursuing a war against us. It is true that many countries have labelled us as terrorists. Recently some who have usually called us by the pet name, rebels have begun to issue some negative statements. Even then lack of outrage when we demand war crime investigation against so called legitimate government for pursuing so called legitimate goal of eradicating so called terrorism, we have no reason to loose hope. I believe that clearly the Sri Lankan Government has not been able to deceive the world. Yes, rhetorically or momentarily the world bodies denounce us for time to time, but still we are the pet rebels of the world.

Dear Peace Loving Nobel Price Committee, this trust vested on us heartens our soul (If we still have one, that is. Since we have lost our souls, it heartens the black hearts of our empty souls.). The world is still standing by us. The international community cannot be fooled by the enormous false propaganda of our enemies.

These firm and magnificent attributes of humane international community are a divine inspiration for our struggle of freedom. Therefore if there is any doubt in the international community why our one and only Son God deserves the Nobel peace Price, due to momentary lapse of sense caused by falling into the dark abyss of vicious lies uttered against our true God by our inhumane and untruthful enemies, I am compelled to write this appeal. My hope is to convince you to correct the most unjust oversight in the history of mankind. This is essential for the wellbeing of mankind and its respect and dignity.

This letter will make sure that our Only God will receive Nobel peace price in twenty four hours (Why wait any longer, why follow any conventions of waiting until usual time of Nobel price, when it is about rectifying a great injustice?). If this grave error is not corrected with in twenty four hours, we will send one of our most precious and humane gifts to you (You may have to wait since the our divine rituals require that she (our gift courier) take her last meal with our Supreme one and her photo taken with the same Divineness. I remind you Rajive Ghandi with utmost compassion.

Most Impressive Qualifications of Sun God for the Nobel Peace Price.

  • Our Son God is the inventor of magnificent technology of suicide bombing which is the most inhumane (Oh my tongue is tight, it needs some rest before it can do the acrobatics again) killing method in history (We in the LTTE believe that this is enough qualification for the Nobel Price. If this cannot qualify, nothing else can do the job.).
  • Our Son God has taken a whole population as hostage asking Sri Lankan Nation as ransom. Our Son God wears a whole population of babies, elders, women, children just as body defense armor. This also a unique and innovative invention. We are surprised, how have you overlooked this one? What else one can do to get the Nobel price-of peace, any thing else- No problem, but of peace-How come?
  • Proscription of child soldiers by force and kidnapping is a proudly held ethical and moral code in our organization. So is our denying it. (Can you find anybody who can do tongue acrobatics as much cleverly as we do? What peaceful creatures we are?)
  • Under the divine guidance of our True God, we have become the world champions in drug trafficking, extortion, people smuggling, running prostitution rings, gun running and robbing from credit cards. Moreover, we are the masters many other various forms of various crimes still the world does not know about. (This one is an extra qualification, isn’t it? What does the world have come into-no justice-hey?)
  • Our organization has perfected and galvanized our mentality on the motto; have no mercy and kill anybody. This include babies, temple goers etc, etc. You name; we have already done them.
  • Our organization has the distinct ability to bomb religious places without any concern, guilt or remorse.
  • The one of the most revered moral code of our Elam theology has made us a unique bunch of people who has no remorse, guilt or shame. What a peaceful achievement is this. Can you see? We can do any thing- for instance kill a baby in the most gruesome way- still we can be in peace with ourselves because we have no remorse and do not feel guilt and have no shame. See how peaceful creatures we are? Can you find any other who is peaceful as us? No way.
  • We can rob medicine and food from people and accuse the Government of genocide, which keeps sending that humanitarian aid. (We can even laugh at this. They send the medicine and we use it to treat the rebels who kill their soldiers, and then we accuse of them of genocide. The beauty of this is that we have no shame or conscience. Some times I feel that this is even a better qualification than the first. Only if the world has any true sense left in it.
  • We have no second thoughts (only the first thought-then it is done) of killing anybody who crosses HIS path, even world leaders. (Oh this is becoming very difficult. MY TONGUE ACHES. Which one of these is the best qualification? None second to another.)
  • When we accuse the government of genocide, we can simply forget there is a large Tamil population happily living in Colombo, East and Jaffna and none of them is trying to escape. But the people we took with us dream and plan to escape, risk their lives by walking on deliberately mined (another act of divine peace-just to kill the escapees), roads riding through dangerous waters. And if the mines do not do the jobs our Sun God’s Faithfull soldiers are there to torture and kill them. (This is a good one. When I think about I am shaking with elation. This cannot go unnoticed by the price committee. What I specially like about is that we have no mercy. Please have mercy on us.
  • We use artillery guns from the areas of civilian safe zone. Then we accuse the Government of shelling us. See how peacefully clever we are.
  • There is yet another one. We even forcibly recruit from UN Workers and their families.
  • Or I was just about to forget. We even use the Government supplied fertilizer to make bombs of death. See, we do not believe in anything that can sustain lives (we mean the lives of others). We have developed this theory “Who needs to produce food if bombs can be produced? Who needs development when we can cause plenty of destruction all around?

This list can go on and go on. We believe that you are convinced of the unique qualifications of our Supreme one for the Nobel Peace price. You will not find any body else who has such distinct attributes. Let the great historical blunder be corrected and Nobel Peace Price is bestowed on the one and only one who deserves it. Maybe I can add one more reason to convince you.

Our Son God has a true plan for peace. HE is going to eliminate everybody else except his true faithful ones. Does not it guarantee peace, ONLY US-THEN PEACE? What a marvelous genius, simple thought? Who else has the audacity, wisdom and morality to think of and act on a theme like “ONLY US-THEN PEACE”. You have to admit, I have more than convinced you. If not your gift is on the way. The garland is coming.

This time, I truly rest my case. I know in my heart that Nobel Peace Price of Eternity (whole history of mankind) will be granted to my True GOD with in twenty four hours.

Yours truly

One and only Prophet Nadeshan of One and only True Son God

Remember the peace theme: ONLY US-THEN PEACE

I want to add: This author does not like war. The cruelest aspect of war is not the deaths or civilians or immense crimes committed against women and children or the property. It is the fact that sometimes war is a must and that is the cruelest aspect of way. This must-nature of war hurts my heart. It bleeds my heart. I hate war for the reason that we are compelled to have it. Some time only option for humanity is war. War is needed be avoided if it is all possible. Only after all reasonable humanly possible efforts then one must go to war. Nevertheless, we the people of Sri Lanka and friends of Sri Lanka expect its Government to conduct the war with utmost care to minimize civilian inconveniences and casualties. This is a must. There cannot be any vacillation from this principle.

As the majority, the Sinhalese need to be able to assert themselves without asking subjugation of any other group. Any group who simply chooses to merely assert themselves cannot ask subjugation of any other group. War is hard, difficult, destructive and inhumane to the civilians and the soldiers. We cannot risk any more wars. WE are THEM and THEY are US. We both have dreams and nightmares, hopes and aspirations and tears and smiles. Let us first be Sri Lankan then we can take a second label as we see it fits. What matters is not the label but our lives and how we want to live our lives. I hope that the war has really united us. Politicians please give up your greed of power, get together and build up the National consciousness. As Sinhalese people organize many religious rituals to bless safety for soldiers there should be such events to bless safety for civilians. Sinhalese and other people should collect items and send them to refugee camps.

Politicians, do not try to seek cheap political profit from human misery. Stand for fairness to all not for a vote you get from a misguided Tamil or Sinhalese.

Sinhala is a distinct language that evolved in Sri Lanka, but shares an ancient root script with Tamil

Author: Rover - mworth8@gmail.com

Sinhala is a distinct language that evolved in-situ in Sri Lanka, and Tamil language evolved in India, but still, Sri Lankan Tamil is distinguishable from Indian Tamil. Sinhala has a more unique word repertoire than Sri Lankan Tamil, when compared to any other language in the world. In other words, almost no Sinhala will be identified by any Indian (or any other race), whereas most of Sri Lankan Tamil would be understood by at least 65 million Indians. Here the mechanisms that may have been important in the evolution and development these two languages are considered.

The roots of Sinhala is Indo-Germanic (Aryan) in origin but is very distinct from its Indian mother language. The reason for this is probably allopatry (evolving in isolation), which is an important mechanism in the evolution of new languages (as much as the evolution of new species). To gather a fairly substantial repertoire of unique words that the Sinhala language has, Sinhala must have evolved in isolation for over a long period of time in Sri Lanka. It may have both retained some ancestral words that have now gone extinct in its mother language, and also would have evolved unique words. Given the fact that there are so many disparate languages in the Indo-Aryan group of languages even within India were strict isolation is not possible, it is not surprising that Sinhala quickly evolved to be a unique language in isolation.

The most parsimonious explanation to the origin and evolution of Tamil would have been in India, as it has the greater population (that use Tamil) in India and the roots to other Indian languages (like Kannada and Malayalam) is quite distinct. There are only a fewer unique words peculiar to 'Sri Lankan Tamil' when compared to Indian Tamil; but a little bit more so with other south Indian Dravidian languages; and the Sri Lankan Tamil grammar is also slightly different from that of Indian Tamil. This too would have happened due to the isolation of Sri Lankan Tamil language, but to a lesser degree, when compared to Sinhala.

It is hard to imagine a scenario where Sinhala evolving in India and then, the whole population migrating over to Sri Lanka (without leaving many traces of this language in India); or that after part of this hypothetical population moved over to Sri Lanka, the ancestral population going extinct in India (I don't think in India languages would readily go extinct, evidenced by the number of languages that persists together). However the languages that persist today in India are closely interrelated to each other, and hence the roots of these languages are embedded very much in India. These alternative explanations are less parsimonious than the one mentioned above.

Hence Sinhala must have evolved in isolation over a longer period of time (it would be hard to determine how fast a language evolves as many complex factors are involved), when compared to Sr Lankan Tamil.

However, Tamil people have also lived in Sri Lanka for over a very long period of time, and they also have some words that are not used by Indian Tamils. For example, names with a –koon ending (like Gnanakoon) are not known from India. However, these names have even filtered into Sinhala names (like Tennakoon ect.). The grammar of Sri Lankan Tamil people is also distinct from that of Indian Tamils. This shows that isolation of the Sri Lankan Tamils from India have given rise to this.

All the natural languages in the world are closed systems, this means that you don’t need to go outside the rules of grammar of a given language to find explanations for meaningful statements that it can make. Grammar, in a given language, is a system in which words are put together to express something meaningful; contrary to popular belief, however in natural languages, grammar evolves a long time before writing, and most of the rules of grammar are based on speech/sound, rather than writing.

If grammar is based on sound/speech, can all of these languages use a single script to write in that language?! Yes in theory it can (we can write a Tamil sentence that is sounded out, using Sinhala letters right?), but the script must be flexible enough to write all these sounds effectively. Ancient Brahmi script was used to write in many languages, it was the root script for most of contemporary scripts in the Asian region, including surprisingly even perhaps Korean (Brahmi script also is the basis for the alphabetical order for Japanese Kana). However, some of the sounds, for example that you find in Sanskrit, cannot be written using Brahmi script, so another slightly different system developed, which is called Prakrit (but even for Prakrit, the roots are in Brahmi script). However, I should mention, despite this short coming, that early Sanskrit has also been written in Brahmi script.

It is pertinent to talk a little bit about King Asoka and his inscriptions, as he greatly influenced the establishment of Buddhist culture in Sri Lanka. Asoka’s inscriptions were written in Prakrit, to be precise, Magadhi Prakrit. Some think that Pali (the language of Theravada Buddhism) and Maghadi Prakrit are the same. And when Mahinda Thero, Asoka’s son who introduced Buddha Dharma to Sri Lanka during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa, he also introduced Pali to Sri Lanka. Though Pali was not significantly absorbed into Sinhala, the Sinhalese lay people maintain the Pali language as a religious oral tradition in the form of Buddhist gathas and sutras, and currently write and perpetuate these in Sinhala script.

The earliest inscriptions in Sri Lanka, before the evolution of the Sinhala script, are in Brahmi script; and both Sinhala and Tamil scripts evolved from this. Sinhala adopted a more circular style (some argue that this style was easier to be written on Palm leaves -Thalpath- without damaging them) the origin of this again occurred in Sri Lanka and Tamil script evolved into a more angular style, and the origin was in Southern India. (At a time when we are only talking about differences, I thought I should highlight what we share).

According to William Geiger, some of the unique sounds that are not seen in Indo-Aryan or Dravidian languages arose in Sinhala during the 6th century AD. And these sounds were accommodated in its script, which had at this point evolved very close to its present form. Sri Lankan Tamil people, possibly very recently, perhaps due to the influence of mass media, have slightly adopted these sounds, but most still cannot pronounce these sounds. However, it is not present in their written grammar, as Tamil script cannot accommodate these sounds. So again we see a recent attempt by Sri Lankan Tamil people to adopt these Sinhala sounds, even when their script does not really allow it.

Considering that language is one of the causes for the ethnic tension between the two groups, it is high time that both ethnicities in Sri Lanka work together, enjoying the common origins that we share, appreciating things that we don’t share, and respecting the attempts at integration of some of the unique features of these languages. This is the best way to prevent terrorist groups like the LTTE that play to the lower instincts of people from gaining a foot hold in our Sri Lankan society.

This is a rewrite of one of my brief notes that appeared here. The bloggers Wijayapala, ReallyCold and Swarnajith Udana are acknowledged for highlighting a couple of issues that needed to be clarified.

Artillery Shells Fired From A Tongue - The Inhumane Saga of Nadashen And The Clan

Author: Swarnajith Udana - swarnajithudana@gmail.com

Have you heard?

Frightened by the immediate defeat when the civilian defense cover is removed, commenting on the demand of the world organizations from the LTTE to release the Wanni hostage population, Nadashen and his Sun God has further tightened the screws on civilians and are threatening the World. To this effect, Nadashen roared:

“The LTTE calls this a calculated ploy by the Lankan government to uproot Tamils from their traditional habitat.”

Can you really here what he is saying. It is true that he is trying to be thunderous and claim moral righteousness. This is not a surprise. That is the way it has been with them, or any drug dealer or warlord. The surprise is that the world has put up with it for so long rather than putting it off.

One does not need to be a military expert to see that if the civilian hostage population is released then the LTTE would have been obliterated in a few hours, at most in a day or two even a couple of months ago. The fact that the beast, the LTTE, is still panting is remarkable evidence that how caring the Government’s attitude towards its citizens is. From the fact that the world had not been able to decipher the motivation of the LTTE in taking civilians hostages until late, are we to conclude that the world suffered from lack of military expertise, or the world was simply pretending or merely misguided.

Nadesan writes: "I ask if the UN, or India, or any other country would ever promote uprooting and relocating the people of Gaza as a solution? And the Tamil people are expected to willingly rush to these barbed wired internment camps in these surrounding situations? Is this what UN, India and other nations are envisioning for Tamils? The human shield term is a propaganda used towards uprooting the Tamil people from their traditional habitat. The Tamil people have lived here for generations and want to continue living here and make a livelihood in these lands. The Sri Lankan Government, UN and other international community's statements that claim to seek the well being of Tamil people - in uprooting them to forcibly and put them in barbed wired military run camps is unprecedented."

For some watchers and champions of human rights this might be wonderful news. They might be hallucinating that Nadeshan is making a divine effort of making the world a utopian heaven which has no crime and evilness. Yes, it is true there are no crimes in this world because any thing can be justified by this or that. For example, the Lahore attack was morally right otherwise the perpetrators would not have done it. That is Elam logic and its twisted character.

Nadashen brings the visual image of barbed wires into the discussion. The real meaning is not about the Tamil civilian welfare. It is about the Sun God’s right to send suicide black tiger killers freely to cities. Nadashan did not know (yes, he did not know) a suicide killing had occurred even inside a refugee camp killing the people what he says that he was liberating. Again, we are at the wrong end here. Sun God can do any think he wishes with his chosen people.

Did you notice that Nadeshan is asking whether it is right to uproot people from their own land? How true is it? It is true, isn’t it? What about the Muslim people lived in the North? What about the Sinhalese people lived in those areas? That uprooting is alright, morally correct and divinely (Sun Godly) blessing, otherwise they wouldn’t have done it. They might try to cover their answers in many disguises. To this effect, they will use history, human rights, and claimed that someone did wrong and they had to respond. For instance, why did they kill monks and temple goers in Anuradhapura? They did it only because it was right, wasn’t it? Whatever they say, ultimately it is amount to Elam logic of evilness: we can do it, therefore it is right.

What about Tamil people who were uprooted from Jaffna and forcibly took with the LTTE years ago? Nadashen would say there was no uprooting in that case; even a single mammoth was never used to uproot at that time (They used only guns and false propaganda.), so how can it be uprooting? It was an act of liberation. LTTE did it and therefore it was right, otherwise the LTTE Wouldn’t dare to do it. The world has been listening with sympathetically raised ears. What about taking Tamil people with them form Mankulam, Kilinochhi etc. with the LTTE to use as defense amour? Wasn’t it uprooting? Nadeshan would be surprised at this question. That uprooting had a moral reason. The problem is with the world. The world is blind to see this. Yes, the world cannot see that these Elam people were created by Sun God, so HE is at liberty to do anything with them what so ever HE chooses. That may be what he would be feeling, but he would say something different. He would say, “The civilians are of great love with magnificent Sun God. They voluntarily follow our one and only Sun God wherever HE goes. The world is merely too jealous. The government is only too vicious. Some of these civilians even voluntarily shoot themselves for attempting, wishing or thinking about going to the Government controlled area. Yes, nothing is a sin and no one is a sinner in Elam theology as long as Sun God blesses it. Anything can be justified if Sun God wishes so.

This behavior should not cause surprise. That was how Stalin, Pol Pot, Hitler or any other who is blinded by any ideology thinks. The ideology comes first before any thing. Since the master is the ideology itself, Sun God is the only thing or only one that has right to exist. Everything or everyone else exists for his wishes and whims and is under his mercy. For example, consider Rajiv Gandhi. This abhorrent behavior is the nature of the beast. What surprises me is that only now the world has just begun to awake from their slumber to look at the reality, but still many are sleeping or pretending to sleep.

One of the myths that LTTE bases its Elam theology is that Tamils were not allowed to practice their own way of life in Sri Lanka. I am a critique of my own Sinhalese people and the past and present Governments. I had never wittingly white washed any wrong doing of my people or its Governments. In that sense I had never been a patriot. I will never be a patriot but I can solemnly affirm that this is a lie constructed in a miraculous creation. Not only Tamils were and are enjoying their own cultural traditions and way of living, but also Sinhalese and others have embraced Tamil culture for some extent. Katharagama, Koneswaram are examples of that. Tamil students were and are taught in Tamil unless they choose/chose otherwise. Sinhalese people have made gods of Tamils their gods, except the ungodly one in the most recent times. This cultural infusion might have happened in both ways.

However, I am not here to attest that there were no problems for Tamils at all. If I say that I am lying to myself. At least some of the Tamils were brought here by colonial powers. Then they use the divide and rule strategy. This strategy has polluted and poisoned both ethnic groups. The Tamil political leaders surrendered themselves to the temptations designed by the colonial masters. Subsequently they even went so far such as asking for fifty fifty presentation for Tamils (20%) and others 80% (Percentages are relevant to that period.). That was the magnitude of the audacity displayed by then Tamil leaders. This did not happen without the permission of Sinhalese politicians. Also, when they decided to respond to this audacity rather than asserting the rights of the Sinhalese people by standing on fairness to all, they choose to aggregate the problem for cheap political benefits.

This has created a problem of dignity and other practical problems to Tamils. For instance, one MP, in mid 1960s, has stated in the Parliament that he would not sleep until the last Tamil is killed and wearing shoes made out of the skin of that last Tamil. At this juncture, if the whole country had expressed outrage towards this person and his statement, if the Sinhalese politicians had stood for fairness for all, the present history would have become an ancient history long time ago.

I sincerely hope that in the post war era, people will rise for fairness for all and Sinhalese people will not demand subjugation of Tamil or other people and instead demand that all groups commit and dedicate to the concept of one Sri Lankan Nation. For this to happen, it will never be sufficient or prudent to draw a line in land say this side is ours and the rest is yours. Even if we do the separation of groups to different lands, the war can still continue. If the separatism is right for Tamil, Then Muslims also deserve a piece of their own; also the Up country Tamils. If we go in the lines of division of land we may even have to divide Colombo or devolve power into Tamil Colombo, Sinhalese Colombo and Muslim Colombo. Where would it end? Moreover, in the East and North there would be two minorities, namely Sinhalese and Muslims. Then the East and North should be again separated into many pieces. At the end even the streets would need to have demarcations or power devolution.

In a recent speech, Dr. Nalin de Silva has expressed the view that Sinhalese people had been tamilised and Tamil people had been sinhalised during the natural process of history. This information should be brought to the consciousness of the masses so that they will understand what is at stake is not a label like Sinhalese or Tamil, but human lives and their ways of living. But, unfortunately, in the same speech, Dr. Nalin seemed to be demanding total subjugation of each ethnic group to the Sinhalese hegemony. What Sinhalese people need to learn is to accommodate, acknowledge and respect all other groups while asserting themselves and without yielding. The Sinhalese need to expect other groups to be assertive without yielding or attempting to domineer. This is hard work but I believe that we have learned that this is much easier than war.

In the post war period of building up this national unity and consciousness, there is a golden role to play for people like Thomas Frenando Fulle and Ananda Sangari etc. These people assert themselves while being sympathetic to the other groups. Another such organization is UTHR(J). Nevertheless, the people like Siri Jayathunga, Wickramabahu Karunarathna are traitors of all the ethnic groups even though their views seem to be sympathetic to Tamils. In reality they are not sympathetic to any living people and their real sympathy is directed only to dead people and dead ideologies. On several blogs dedicated to discuss Sri Lankan National issue, one blogger by the pseudo name Wijayapala, a Sinhalese Buddhist, is taking abuse from both sides, mainly from Sinhalese side. The only reason why he is abused is that he is pro Tamil and pro Sinhalese at the same time. We need many people like him to nurture our ideal of National identity in the consciousness of Sri Lankan people.

What is necessary is to erase the lines that are already drawn in our hearts not drawing new lines in sand. If we can erase these lines of evilness, overcoming these pseudo demarcations of ethnic divide, we can integrate all the ethnic groups as one Nation in which each ethnic group owns the whole country and practices its own way of life and cultural infusion continues to occur in natural way. The suffering of war should have taught us this lesson. I remember a little Sinhalese poem I read a long time ago:

In a place which
Even two people
Cannot take shelter,
Who teaches us
To share even by ten people
Is the
Rain!

I am dreaming of one united Nation. I hope that you share and cherish my dream.

One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter?!

Author: Rover

Often, regrettably, the terms terrorist and freedom fighters (or rebels) are used interchangeably by many, but these two terms are very distinct and should only be used in the correct context. For instance when discussing terrorism in Sri Lanka, major human rights agencies (like Human Rights Watc), ceasefire monitors (Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission) and international media (like BBC, AFP, REUTERS ect.) use these terms randomly, confusing the public about what terrorism actually is. Furthermore, a jaded cliché of those who justify terrorism (eg. MIA – Maya Arulpragasam) is “one man’s terrorist is another man’s’ freedom fighter”, a clear indication that they do not distinguish the two terms.

Confused public is a major problem, especially in democracies; since the democratic process depends heavily on how well informed the public and the representatives of the public are, to address crucial issues in governance. In other words, rule of the people, by the people, for the people is disrupted when the people are misinformed.

Terrorism can be broadly defined as intentionally terrorizing civilians/people of a country to achieve a political goal. However methods used by terrorists to terrorize can differ, such as random shooting, suicide bombings, poison gas attacks, hostage taking ect. The political goals that the terrorists strive for can be as diverse as creation of separate state, spreading of a fanatic ideology, facilitating anarchy so that illegal and immoral practices like pirating and smuggling can be carried out, release of a fellow captive terrorist, ect. Terrorists use this environment of fear and confusion in the general populace to achieve their political goals. Never in the history have any of these groups been concerned about defending the ideals they actively trample on (for example human rights). Terrorists will only honor the democratic ideals once these groups give up violence (renounce violence).

Consider Khmer Rouge, the terrorist organization headed by the infamous Pol-Pot. They did not only attack the Vietnamese forces but also attacked Vietnamese civilians, intellectuals (even non-intellectuals with eye defects that wore spectacles were assassinated!). The ultimate human cost of that conflict was nearly 3 million people; there is no way that all these people are militants, and most of those who died were civilians. Khmer Rouge instilled in the populace a sense of terror or that 'no one is safe'. Even after the conflict has ended, these regions are still paying for the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge.

What did the innocent that died in the 9/11 attacks have against the Jihadis? Basically nothing. Jihadis attacked these innocent civilians to instill a sense fear (or terror) in the greater population (at lease that was the Jihadis aimed for). Terrorists revel on the fact that there is a lack of connection between the cause that they are fighting for and the innocent people that suffer; or in other words, they strive to confuse and terrorize at the same time.

Freedom-fighters do battle against repressive governments and their armies, not against the civilians that they aim to protect/uplift. They don't terrorize civilians to achieve a political goal.

In 1940s, when Nazis overran France, and later tried to suppress the French Citizens by various means, the French Resistance Movement (FR) was born. FR hardly ever tried to instill a sense of fear among the civilians, but only carried out a campaign of attrition against the far more powerful Nazi army and the Vichy regime (the French government that collaborated with the Germans). However, the Vichy regime and the Nazis resorted to terrorist activities. They took large numbers of French civilians as hostages, and for each of the “subversive” acts the FR carried out, several hostages were killed. The Vichy regime tried to put the blame of these killings indirectly on the FR. However, the people realized who the real aggressor was and kept supporting the FR, and even women and children were involved active duty, not necessarily combat duty. The actions of FR enabled Allies to sweep through France quite rapidly after Normandy landing in 1944, and also helped numerous allied soldiers, pilots and spies who were stranded in enemy territory to head back to allied territory.

There are also freedom fighters that do not resort to violence. Mahatma Gandhi and his Satyagrah movement, which can be defined as the resistance of tyranny by mass civil disobedience, is one of the best examples. It is ludicrous to equate something like this with LTTE's unmitigated violence.

LTTE are definitely not freedom fighters, but terrorists, and should be identified and treated as such. BBC and other agencies, by trying seemingly to be neutral in reporting a conflict do a lot of harm to legitimate governments that try to maintain democracies and the rule of law. The atrocities committed by LTTE terrorists are too numerous to list, but is not confined to suicide bombings of public buses and public gatherings, killing of intellectuals (mostly Tamil intellectuals), attacking and killing entire villages, attacking places of worship, assassination of representative of civilians like President Premadasa and Ex-Prime minister of India – Rajiv Gandhi ect.

Some argue that there is state sponsored terrorism as well; sure, but there are two quite distinct categories. First there are regimes that sponsor terrorism: as Bejamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, correctly asserted, terrorists can’t exist without the support of states that support terrorism. Most of the terrorists groups come into being through the support of repressive states, examples are numerous – India initially supporting the Sri Lankan terrorists (many organizations including the LTTE), Iran, Libya, and Iraq supporting numerous middle Eastern terrorist groups, Pakistan’s support of Laksha-E-Toiba ect.

Second there are democracies that fight terrorism using sometimes unconventional methods, and these regimes are often branded, by those who are sympathetic towards actual terrorists, as “state terrorists”. The use of unconventional methods (military intelligence operations ect. – but NOT DELIBERATE killing of civilians), experts say, are needed to counter terrorism.

To compound the situation, democratically elected regimes only get on average a four year term to rule a country, and they have to respect the will of the people during that time and in contrast, terrorists have an unlimited amount of time to do whatever they want to do. For example, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksha has the support of the Sri Lankan citizen to wage the war against the LTTE terrorists, but he has only a short amount of time to do this, but through unity of command,he has been doing this successfully (and there is absolutely no need to perpetuate a problem if it can mostly be dealt with quickly). Though I concur that addressing the root causes that giving rise to terrorism is the best method to make sure that ideologies connected to terrorism do not manifest, one cannot do this during the short four year period while fighting a terrorist regime. So democracies are forced to fight terrorism when and where they see it.

Democracies who fight terrorism also take a huge risk both with its own people and the international community. If the people decide that the war is not going anywhere, and the government has misused its power in suppressing the terrorists, the people can then change the government, they can make way for a more moderate set up (like what happened in the US – Bush being replaced by Obama); IC can contribute to this through many means. So in a democracy, there is a MECHANISM TO CHANGE a repressive regime. Lets’ take Sri Lanka as a general example, for the last 30 years, the LTTE has been fighting the Sri Lanka Government (SLG). Though the LTTE has gotten more and more violent throughout these 30 years, killing up to about 75,000 people, GSL leadership has changed seven times (though the top leader, the president, didn't change so many times, the setup of the government changed). Sometimes, there had been fairly liberal governments and sometimes more autocratic (or Hawkish one might say) governments, and which government next comes into power is decided by the people. So repressive “state terrorism”, if it exists, and if the majority are troubled by it, that government can be defeated when it becomes a problem. However for a terrorist group like the LTTE, the only change is towards causing more violence and problems to civilians, to get at its goal, and there is no non-violent, short term and simple method to get rid of these terrorist groups.

On top of these constraints democracies face in combating terrorism, terrorists groups also exploit the situation by providing access only to agencies and organizations that are only sympathetic/supportive towards their cause, opening up a way for misinformation. Through this sort of pussy-footing, by these supposedly responsible and exemplary organizations like the BBC, with terrorists, and warping of the truth, it is only a matter of time before all what we hold dear (democracy and the associated ideals) will be defeated by terrorists through the very same democratic processes that terrorists seek to annihilate!

Hence, these two terms, terrorists and freedom-fighters, considering the enormous burden that the free (democratic) world endures due to terrorism (terrorists), should never be equated or trivialized.

Audacity Of A Tongue: Nadashen’s Tongue Acrobatics Continues Unabated

Author: Swarnajith Udana - swarnajithudana@gmail.com

Consider this unbelievable act of tongue gymnastics.

“Whenever the LTTE had the upper hand militarily, the Sri Lankan ruling party pretending to find a political solution came for peace talks. But, once finding the time space to strengthen its armed forces, the Sri Lankan ruling party disrupted the peace talks and again created the conditions for war.

The Sri Lankan Governments have staged this drama of deceiving the world and the Tamil people starting from the very first talks, after the launch of the armed struggle, in Thimbu in 1985 till the 2002 ceasefire agreement and the following five years of peace talks under Norway's facilitation.”-Nadashen

Can you see how true this is? Alright, I agree. There is a minor correction to be made. In that statement, LTTE and Sri Lankan Government are occupying each others’ place. If you do not replace LTTE with Sri Lankan Government and vice versa then this is an example of audacity of a tongue which may be unparallel in human history. This tongue is, of course, a gifted tongue. Gifted by the Sun God, that is.

Rajiv Gandhi was killed. It is either “that was an act of liberation” or “Sri Lankan Government did it to paint the LTTE in bad colour”. Which one of these is to be picked is determined by the operational need of the day.

Whatever LTTE does is an act of pure generosity of the highest kind.

Government sends food to Wanni. This is an act of genocide.
LTTE takes this food by force and deny it to the civilians. This is an act of generosity; also an act of liberation of the highest order.

The Government welcomes refugees and look after them. This is genocide.
Tamil civilians are shot at and killed by the LTTE. Further they are used as body armour. This is utmost generosity of the best of human decency.

The roads that can be used by civilians to flee to the government area are mined by the LTTE. That is emancipation.

The Tamil Diaspora cannot feel this human tragedy because their ethnic ideology has blinded them. Any ideology can blind us and can take us to the abyss of evilness. Patriotism, socialism, capitalism or even humanism in extreme form can blind us and push us into the darkness. It happens slowly. So we do not realise unless we stop and look at ourselves frequently to see where we are going.

We need to operate on principles rather than on emotions or rules. We need to practice patriotism for the welfare of our people not for the sake of ideology of patriotism. We need to practice humanism for the benefit of mankind not for the sake of ideology of humanism.

I do not believe that we are exonerated of creating the LTTE. If the right conditions were not there LTTE leader could still have become a psychopath; a social one not necessarily a socio politico one. We are a part of that crime. Tamil people are a part of that crime. We need to find salvation in our hearts, end the blame game and learn how to live together as Sri Lankans had done for many centuries, because we are them they are us.

Miracles Of Money: Unscrupulous Gymnastics Of a “Legal” Professional

Author: Swarnajith Udana - swarnajithudana@gmail.com

What determines who is a terrorist?
What determines what humanism is?
What determines what is evil?
What determines what is good?

A great service of unimaginable value has been rendered by some legal saints who stand for sanctity of human rights and civil liberty by simplifying the process of answering such questions.

The methodology is so simple; unbelievably simple. Only problem is that the answer generates utmost revulsion in any decent person and increases the bank account of the creators of this simple method. This makes one ponder is it really possible such ‘erudite’ people to fall into this despicable level of nastiness and hypocrisy just for color of money. More the zeros in the sum, the deeper the abyss of evilness and darkness these people fall into.

If the Government of Sri Lanka has paid the fee asked by the so called great humanist lawyer then the LTTE is the terrorist organization. Since the Sri Lankan Government has not agreed to pay the fee, that is what has determined what terrorism is not. Since the LTTE has paid more or less than this asked price of 25000 dollars a month, the Sri Lankan government has suddenly become the terrorist party and LTTE has become the angles of peace, champions of liberation, ideals of humanity and priests of sanctity, to the sharp eyes of these lawyers. That is, sharp enough to see only the color of money. This is the miracle of money. This is the ultimate manifestation of incredible ‘legal’ gymnastics of unscrupulousness.

Let us look at a different situation. A farmer may refuse to sell his produce to a customer if the right price is not offered. This is quite normal, but the farmer will not poison the foods in the refrigerator of this customer. A doctor may refuse to treat a person who is not in an emergency situation if the right fee is not agreed upon but the doctor will not falsify the medical history of this patient. Now, an underworld contract killer will obviously behave differently. If the underworld thug does not like the price offered to him by the person A to protect him from B then he will negotiate with the person B to kill the Person A for half the fee. That is natural too. That is what natural to contract killers.

Now these unscrupulous acts legal professionals are amount to contract killing of Tamil people, nothing less and Sri Lanka in general. This frightens me. What would have happened if the Government had agreed to pay the fee? Would this person have become the greatest of the great in our eyes? How ironical, sad and frightening?

This writer will be extremely unhappy, as many others, if Sri Lankan Government acts casually towards the safety of civilian lives. Indications are that the Government is trying to do all it can to save human lives under extremely difficult circumstances. For example, UTHR(J) has commended that soldiers’ behavior at crossing points being exceptionally well. In the refuge camps there could be vultures. Some of these vultures could even be LTTE-ers. Like in Tsunami or New Orleans cyclone there are always vultures who take advantage of human tragedies. This behavior has no racial undertones or is not limited to any particular group. Religious, civil and political leaders can assist the government to eliminate behaviors of such vultures.

We need to look at the promise here. Even after the suicide bombing in side the refugee camp if the soldiers, who are trained to promptly react to even a slightly a threatening situation, can behave with such gentleness towards civilians (even though these civilians could end up being LTTE attackers) is a hallmark of bravery and nobleness of well disciplined soldiers. Again there could be people step out side the norm. In the name of our Tamil brothers and sisters the government needs to look into these possibilities. I emphasize that the tragedy of tsunami brought out the best of humanity and the worst. In any crisis situation, in any country these things could happen. It was reported that how Sri Lankan Sinhalese Nave personnel risked their lives to save Tamil brothers and sisters. Again even in that situation LTTE obstructed these rescue efforts and did not give any assistance to the people.

One may resist that this writer is thinking every civilian as a possible LTTE terrorist. Not so, but this problematic challenge itself epitomizes the brutality of LTTE methodology. Isn’t this another reason why the LTTE needs to be destroyed? Even basic human compassion is a bait of death. They can use so called their own people as baits of deaths. This reminds me Ted Bundy. To rape and kill he lured girls by pretending to be sick.

I would like to summarize what a few zeros in a bank check can do. It can sanctify the act of using babies, women, and elderly people as body protection suits. Yes it is a divine act of endless mercy and human compassion. It can deify drug trafficking, human smuggling suicide killing and any other crime. Yes they are noble acts of liberation. More the zero-more the lowness they would embrace. What I am surprised at is that world has ears to lend them.

I would like to thank Hela Puwath for bringing this aspect to my attention.

Demonstrating for the same reason – to save Tamil civilians

Author: Rover

It was a cold and windy day, in Washington DC on the 20th of February 2009, when I walked over with a couple of other folks down the streets, we walked down Pennsylvania avenue (where we parked our car) and turned onto 15 th street. On my right, I could see the White House, and far away the majestic Washington monument, the worlds tallest obelisk built to commemorate the first US president George Washington. My destination was between these two imposing structures – the Ellipse, an open park fringed with trees where the National Christmas Tree is located, and during the American Civil War where the union troops camped, but more importantly for my story, where we were about to counter-demonstrate against a ruthless terrorist organization, the LTTE.

I was reminiscencing – how could an internationally proscribed terrorist organization be allowed to demonstrate freely in the middle of the epitome of US governance. Was this a dream? Perhaps it won’t be the LTTE, it probably will be just Tamil people, concerned about the plight of the entrapped civilians, wanting to demonstrate against the LTTE to save the Tamils. This I knew was just wishful thinking, and in a corner of my heart I knew that it would be mostly the LTTE.

When I arrived at the Ellipse, it was divided by a broad fence into two halves, the Sri Lankan half and the “Tamil” half ((I use citation marks for a specific reason as you will see later), mounted police were actively keeping an eye for trouble makers; already a large group of "Tamil" supporters had gathered, and already I could hear their slogans through their loudspeakers. They had also got the prime spot, right in front of the State Building next to the White House. Predominantly Canadian and US flags were being waved about. No sign of LTTE flags. But the heat was on.

I watched a group Sri Lankans getting ready for the counter demonstration. I heard someone asking around… “do we have access to a loudspeaker?”; “no not yet, we’ll soon find one” came the answer – we were not that well prepared, at least on the loudspeaker front. Another man was preparing banners. One elderly gentleman had put in a lot of effort and had made a lot of banners; he must have taken at least a day preparing those. And they had some profound slogans. Even some of the ones we discussed on this blog! Another group had prepared the flags, Sri Lankan and the US flags – they were given around. We were ready to go!

A couple of Sri Lankans who obviously had no prior ability to run a demonstration started to lead the chanting. It was a feeble effort, rather depressing. These were probably gentle folk who worked in the nearby offices who were compelled to attend the demonstration in support of our country. Mercifully, soon a group of Sri Lankan youngsters with some spunk and with a little bit of cheer-leading abilities took over, and the chanting took a turn to better. One girl stood out from the rest. She had a high pitched voice, and it pierced all corners of the Ellipse. I started liking this. But still they were not really used to doing this sort of thing, it was obvious. Why should we be? Sri Lankans have better things to do than going all over US, demonstrating and being a public menace; we are not on welfare. In fact many people with Sri Lankan roots missed the demonstration because it was a working day, a Friday.

In contrast, the "Tamil" demonstrators were very good at chanting, they were professionals, I was told (and felt) that the same group attends all the LTTE instigated demonstration in N. America. Apparently around 40 buses had arrived, mostly from Canada, where most of the LTTE supporting idle Tamils who are on welfare live – a good population for the LTTE to exploit.

Curiously, I soon realized that both the Sri Lankans and their opposition were chanting to save the civilians! At least this was one of the major reasons. Why were we then chanting as different groups if we were demanding the same thing?! Perhaps there were no LTTE supporters here? My hope was soon shattered when LTTE flags were suddenly raised; there were 6 of them, and banners of Prabhakaran (wow!), the LTTE leader. So this crowd comprised of LTTE supporters, wanting to save the Terrorists who were entrapped by the Sri Lanka Defense Forces and not really the civilians.

Let me be clear. LTTE is holding Tamil civilians as a human shield, and would not let them go their way despite the Sri Lankan government providing a no-fire zone and safe passage. There was even a two day ceasefire to facilitate the safe movement of civilians, at a great cost to the army. But still, the LTTE didn't let the civilians go. LTTE was admonished severely by the UN for obstructing civilian passage. So it is now well known that LTTE wants to keep the civilians trapped for to further propagate their terrorist activities. So the guys demonstrating here wanted to save the LTTE instead of the entrapped civilians. Government's main goal on the other hand was to crush the LTTE militarily and save the civilians, both in short and long term.

By seeing the Terrorist flags, right in the middle of the US, I was disappointed. How could LTTE terrorists raise their flag in front of the epitome of US democracy? When the US government, itself plagued by the activities of terrorists, had given permission for the “Tamils” to demonstrate, how did the LTTE hijack this? Or were the LTTE terrorists given permission to demonstrate here? How could a proscribed terrorist group loaf around freely and chant against a democracy that is fighting the terrorists? Would anyone have allowed Al-Queda, shinning-path or Hamas activists to demonstrate here? But soon several Sri Lankans called some influential people and the flag-bearers were asked to lower their Terrorist flags.

Another poignant event occurred. A white American had gone to the LTTE side to ask a few questions; to get at the truth. One of his questions had been “why are you demonstrating here, I was in Sri Lanka when LTTE bombs went off and many civilians were killed”. The LTTE supporters had not liked this question and had asked him to “go away!”; he had retorted “this is my country, you can’t ask me to go away!”; the LTTE guys had said “this is our country too!”. After this guy came running into our half and got a Sri Lankan flag and started waving it vigorously about and joined us in our demonstration. Well, he actually went beyond our allotted space into the LTTE half and displayed the Sri Lankan flag! This act was poignant for me as at that moment, Bruce Fein, another American, but who was more interested in materialistic gains rather than moral considerations, was at that very moment with the LTTE supporters, but mercifully I did not see or hear what he was doing.

It was bloody cold, as I said earlier, and it was time to go home, I had been here for almost five hours and was half frozen, time to find a coffee shop somewhere and back to work. I walked away from the Ellipse, cold and hungry, and quite disappointed to hear my country being denigrated by a ruthless terrorist group. The last chants I heard that drifted across the frigid ellipse were made by an LTTE vixen screaming “Sri Lankans are cowards, killing innocent children!” and "let us end this genocide!". Since then I have been wondering how a terrorist group, that terrorized civilians to get at a political goal for 30 years, killing more than 75,000 people in the process, was able to demonstrate to "save civilians", in the grand Ellipse to the right of the White House.

"Genocide" Accusation of Bruce Fein

Author: Swarnajith Udana - swarnajithudana@gmail.com

People are blinded by many things; sometimes it is patriotism, sometimes religion, it could be power or earning for glory, perhaps a solidified ideal or penchant for money. I cannot say what has exactly blinds and drives Mr. Bruce Fein. Irrespective of the reasons that blinds him, the outcome of his actions creates a disastrous inhumane bias against innocent civilians and instigates a culture of worship of suicide bombing, using civilians as defence body armour (human shield), drug trafficking, human smuggling, kidnapping children and sending them to war front as canon-fodder, credit card frauds and various other crimes.

I, as a humanist, always appreciate and admire any human being who speaks up against oppression but when people patronize terrorism in the name of humanity that is a worse crime than terrorism itself. If one wants to stand against oppression in true sense then they must oppose all forms of oppression. Only then we can stand as true humanists and help oppressed people. An example which satisfies this condition is University Teachers for Human Rights, Jaffna, Sri Lanka.

I do not wish to whitewash or talk down horribleness of 1983 riots. Leaders of then Government were responsible for that crime. This is obvious. As Mr. Ananda Sangari once pointed our, what is not obvious is that what happened was what LTTE exactly wanted to happen. Then Government played into the hands of LTTE. Though this does not alleviate, excuse the role of Sinhalese mob or that of the Government, 1983 riots speaks up volumes for cruelty, barbarianism, unscrupulousness of LTTE.

If the LTTE can use the so called "their own people", whom they say that they are the sole representative of, as bait and if the LTTE can kill "their own people" whom they say they are liberating without any mercy and if the LTTE can use the people whom they are going to liberate as cheap body defence armour that has less value than a bag of dirt that itself stands as evidence of their inhumane nature of unspeakable magnitude. If so called humanists cannot see this, then if this is not natural blindness of perceiving reality, then it should be a blindness caused by wishful and willful search of wealth. This kind of blindness is as bad as LTTE terrorism.

Abhorrence Of Unmatchable Magnitude: Heroics Of Herculean Tongue Continues

Author: Swarnajith Udana - swarnajithudana@gmail.com

“We do not recruit under-age children for war.”

Nadashen has spoken the truth. I am not trying to imply that he has lied recently. May be he was lying earlier but now he does not. He does not lie only because he cannot lie anymore. If we think he lies that it is our erred perception. Some one said that our reality is God’s dream. Nadashen’s reality is Son God’s dream. To be able to lie one needs to be able to recognize and feel the real world around. When one keeps lying then the falsehood usurp the person then only the falsehoods live through the person. For this living falsehood truth is the Son God. Son God may be dragging a ten Year old out of the lap of his or her mother to be sent to war front, but Nadashen is unable to see this. Son god says “Hey my prophet Nadashen “we do not recruit under-age children for war. We never use suicide bombers among civilians.” Then that is the truth nothing but the truth. Even if Nadashen is doing the dragging of children himself the truth is “we do not recruit under-age children for war. How dare UN or anybody question this God professed truth?

In the very early time when the prophet had to utter the truth given by Son God he might have felt a little awkward. Then he might have worked hard and promoted himself to the position that he could chuckle when the world organizations fell for Son God’s truth. At that time he knew he was lying. Son God might not have liked it. You cannot chuckle for people believing the Sun God’s truths. Then Nadashen should have taken the next leap to the status that he could not chuckle when the world fell for his God’s truths. Instead he would have been grateful for the God himself (Son God What I mean) for giving him the opportunity to enlighten ignorant world. That is not the end. Now he has elevated to the position that he is ready to do jihad if any one cares to deny Son God’s truth. He is so sad because he can not salvage the world’s nonbelievers from darkness of grave sin,

That is why I am telling you that Nadashen cannot lie any more. He and his organization have surpassed the stage that when they were lying they knew that they were lying. During that initial stage when they lied and world fell for the lies they would have congratulated each other for the effectiveness of their lying. That is, they have been truthful to the truth and themselves. Now they have crossed that threshold. When their gospel sayings are not believed by the people now they are really sad, upset and lament what the world is coming to. They are going through excruciating pain of carrying the cross to the Calvary Mountain to salvage us from our sins of falsehood. So they cannot lie.

In fact, come to think about it LTTE does not recruit teenagers. It was created by teenagers in 1970s. Wasn’t it? LTTE does not need to drag young kids from the bosoms of their parents. Parents and children themselves willingly come to sacrifice themselves in the altar of Son God. Suicide killing is the ultimate ritual of sacrifice that brings heavenly Son Godly bliss to the lambs. The civilians are not kept in Wanni as bulletproof garments. It is just Son God is mercifully granting the ultimate privilege of being the lambs of sacrifice so that they can attain heaven of one and only Son God. Allowing Civilians to be in Wanni is the epitome of endless mercy and boundless compassion of Son God. Nothing else. Any thing else is a lie.

If the world does not believe this gospel it is blasphemy and treachery against Son God. That is what they believe that they believe and want world to believe. Who can question these? How ridiculous to doubt these? What is the world coming to?

Can we call the most deadly snake of the world vicious? No we cannot. We can say it to a person that he is vicious. That makes sense. But, how can we blame or accuse a snake for being vicious. It is the very nature of the animal. That is how it survives. I am sure these believers might not have born like that but they have been evolved into the stage that to call them vicious is no longer appropriate. If such a dangerous animal is in our backyard even though we do not call it names we know what the solution is. we refuse to share this planet with the animal and go to a different planet. Since this is not possible then there is only one alternative.

LTTE viciousness far exceeds the ultimate level that humans can be vicious for the reason that they do not feel their viciousness. In fact they feel that their horrible crimes, suicidal killings of innocents as acts of sacredness; sacrifices for their one and only God. Everything what they do can be justified by Son God’ dream.

At this time I would like to mention the main character, (Maybe my memory is faulty here.) Raskolnikov, in Dostoevsky’s “Crime and Punishment”. The student killed a unscrupulous pawnbroker with hate, yet he did not loose the ability to repent. When he suffers from pain of repentance we almost forgive him not because of the unscrupulousness of the lady he killed but because of the tenacity of his repentance. Even if we do not completely forgive him we feel like lending our shoulder to him for comfort and patting his back. We do so because he resembles our fallibility and then he reassures us goodness of our hearts.

Raskolnikov might have never crossed the threshold of embracing blindness to one’s own viciousness. So we pat him. LTTE has crossed that threshold decades ago and has crept light years into the realm of blindness. NO LONGER PATTING WORKS OR is APPROPRIATE.

Last but not least, let us take care of ourselves and avoid being evolved into such poor examples of humanity regardless what ever the ideals or dreams we cherish.

Nadesan: Tongue of the Mission -Mission of the Tongue

Author: Swarnajith Udana - swarnajithudana@gmail.com

If there is single reason why crime prevails, what is it? It is the fact that we own one of most dangerous weapon. In appearance it is soft, delicate and pinky. The vicious aspect of this does not come from its appearance. It comes from its flexibility. This flexibility is needed for its original purpose. Being very clever we have used this most resourceful aspect as a tool of dehumanization. It can bend up and down and left and right. It can even be rolled.

The tongue.

It is one of the most vicious weapons of dehumanization. Do you need proof? Consider this.

"We are deeply sad and puzzled at the attitude of the apex institution of humanity, the United Nations, in not taking effective measures to protect the life, security and interests of innocent Tamil civilians," said LTTE's Political Head B. Nadesan on Tuesday. "

If it is not the fault of tongue what is it?

Nadasan complains that UN has not taken any effective measures to protect innocent Tamil civilian lives. How true is this? Is not this true if we assume that tongue has different meanings to the words according what slant it takes. Is it not true that UN has demanded LTTE release civilians. It surprises Nadasen that UN does not seem to stand for saving the life of LTTE. This particular Nadasen-tongue also says more than that.

It is god given right that they can maim and kill people at will. It is god given right that LTTE can do drug trafficking, prostituting, human smuggling, credit card frauds. It can wear so called its own people as defensive body armour. It can use the people that they are saying they are liberating as pawns who would face agonised death so that it can be used for propagandistic and/or military value. They can submerge “their own people” if they can just reverse their military debacles. The LTTE is asking who can interfere with these God given rights. Who will dare to question these rights given by Son God? That is what he is claiming.

Is this not the fault of tongue? To complete this note it is necessary that I mention another tongue-crime. That happened in Parliament in mid sixties. One Member of Parliament said in the parliament that he could not sleep until each Tamil is killed and he wears slippers made out of the skin of the last Tamil killed.

How can we tame the tongue? To tame the tongue we need to tame our thoughts. How do we tame the thoughts? Thoughts have materialistic base most of the time. As we believe we are evolved from apes. Apes are territorial. This had to be other wise they could not have been able to survive. We inherited this tribalistic and territorial nature form our forefathers. This is also not bad in itself if we understand that was necessary for our survival. Maybe still this behaviour has some positive role to play in our lives. The problem arises when we raise these natural instincts to level of super ideals that have no material basis and have their own existence.

The ideal become even bigger than the Universe itself. Then we develop xenophobia. If we understand that all these natural instincts are common for all of us and if we also know that we all share the same tears and laughs, dreams and hopes, life and death perhaps may be we will be able to tame our thoughts and develop a form of patriotism based on universality of justice and equality. This may help us to tame our tongues.

Nadasan’s tongue is further evidence of the viciousness of intrinsic nature of LTTE. LTTE and its supporters are basically unable to feel its viciousness. How can any one question God given right to be inhumane? Unbelievable is this for them, as it seems.

Death by Fire - Tigers' End-Game (updated)

Author: Rover

- update of my last post -

After 30 years of self-destruction of its cadre with the intention of terrorizing innocent civilians by creating suicide bombers, LTTE is now encouraging self destruction of their remaining cadre in protest (to gain sympathy) of being annihilated for being suicide bombers and terrorists! Seriously, how smart is this? Here I analyze generally why people resort to death by fire, the explicit message the LTTE is trying to convey by this, and the futility of this primitive practice.

People practice self-immolation for two major reasons: renouncement and devotion.

Self-immolation for renouncement: In the modern context, the most common form of self-immolation for renouncement is as a political protest. Usually, someone from the weaker political entity would burn oneself in protest of the practices of a stronger and deviant political force. This was the case when Thich Quan Duc, a Mahayana Vietnamese Buddhist monk burned himself in protest of the mal-treatment that was inflicted upon the clergy by the Ngo Dinh Deim’s government. In another case, a University of California (at San Diego) student burned himself in protest of the active presence of US troops in Vietnam. There are numerous cases of self immolation to express renouncement.

Self-immolation for Devotion: The most famous example of self immolation for devotion is the archaic Hindu practice of Sati, where a new widow jumps into the burning pier of her dead husband. This practice has now been banned in India; and was never condoned by Mahabarata (a prominent Hindu religious text). In another case of devotion, with the schism of the Russian church, entire villages of the orthodoxy (Russian Orthodox Church) burned themselves and termed it “Baptism Fire”. This is just one example out of many, especially by fundamentalist religious sects, for who practiced mass self immolation to express devotion. Self-immolation is also prevalent in India for hard to believe more mundane reasons to do with public figures. For example, a man burned himself when Tamil movie superstar Rajinikanth’s marriage was not doing well in the 1980s. In another instance when Muthuvel Karunanidhi the present chief minister of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu was arrested by his rival M.G. Ramachandran in 1981, eleven Tamil people burned themselves to express devotion to Karunanidhi. Though these men burned themselves predominantly in devotion to the leader, they were also renouncing his arrest - so both devotion and renouncement can sometimes be interwoven, and hard to be distinguish from each other. LTTE now seems to be targetting this self-burning tendency of especially the uneducated oppressed masses of South India to further its propaganda.

Curiously, some Hindus and some sects of Christians practice localized immolation to show devotion to their respective gods. A sect of French Jesuits burn pars of their bodies (thigh, foot, palms ect.) in devotion for the pain that Jesus felt when he was crucified.

Importantly, however there are two more reasons for death by fire, which are usually not much talked about. These are forced burnings and self-immolation for cursing.

Forced burnings (by others) - It is known that during the time of the historical Rus' people (mostly ancient Russians, Belorussians and Ukrainians), when a slave owner died a loyal female slave was burnt with the master. In India, forced burnings of wives who didn’t want to perform Sati when their husbands died, are reported. In the old west, infidels and witches were burned at a stake. Usually a witch hunt ended in burning of a few innocents that behaved differently from others. Though “forced burnings” is not strictly a practice of self-immolation, I include it here, as you see later, because someone can be MENTALLY forced to do this.

Self-immolation to curse someone – This is little known, but at least two groups of people in India, the Charans and Rajputs self immolate to bring a curse upon someone who had perpetrated a foul deed upon them (or their people). Both these groups are North Indian Aryan (not South Indian Dravidian) sects that are renowned for their martial abilities. Interestingly, they perform self-immolation only against a closely related entity; faced with a distantly related foe, they always wage violent war. This character is important in what I am going to talk in relation to the LTTE.

Several hardcore LTTE supporters, and perhaps these were even former suicide cadre of the LTTE, recently self-immolated: one person in Switzerland and two in Tamil Nadu died, and one man in London was injured. Anyway, these acts were in support of the LTTE who is now facing an imminent military annihilation at the hands of the Sri Lanka defense forces.

The LTTE self-immolations, I argue, are a combination for all the four reasons (renouncement, devotion, forced burning and self immolation for cursing). Through these, it disparages the government’s military campaign against the LTTE, where the Tigers have lost significant amounts of land (which they fanatically revere and call Eelam) and cadre. These immolations are clearly a message to the west and the Tamil community in general to join in greater protest. But protest for what?! It must be the first time in contemporary history that supporters are setting themselves alight in the hope of saving an INTERPOL absconding terrorist chief and an internationally proscribed terrorist organization.

Through self-burning, LTTE cadre also show devotion to the cause (attaining Tamil Eelam) and the "demi-god" Prabhakaran. It is well known that LTTE have a culture very much different from the other Dravidian Hindus. The true Tigers venerate their leader and land more than anything else, even more so than Hinduism (Hinduism embodies Indian cultural aspects as well and is not only a religion), which they consider to be a pariah concept; lack of respect for Hinduism is shown by the killing of several Hindu priests, desecrating Hindu temples (for example the mayor of Jaffna, Alfred Duraiappah was killed by the Tiger leader at point blank inside a Hindu temple), and constant Eelamization of names associated with the LTTE (for example, Eelam is now called Ezham, and Prabhakarana is called Paripaharan ect.). Interestingly, though normally Hindus prefer to cremate (burn) the bodies of their dead and float the resulting ashes in a sacred river, LTTE prefer to bury their dead so that they can build cemeteries that can later be glorified. This too is a deviant practice from Hinduism.

There is an enormous and constant social pressure from the LTTE leadership towards its members to support the LTTE; and this includes facilitating (or forcing) self-immolation. This too has been prevalent throughout its history. One of the main reasons for the west to ban this organization was the harassment of the Diaspora by the LTTE (illegal taxation ect.). One might protest the third claim, but one must remember that LTTE is not a group of freedom fighters but a world renowned group of terrorists; who have pioneered and mastered the self-destruction of human beings, the suicide bombings. So self-immolation of the LTTE is not recent if you consider self-destruction through suicide bombing (where there is also burning involved) as a form of self-immolation where you also kill other people; forced self immolation after all, is only small deviation from the psychology that is involved in suicide bombings; and Tigers are well known to brainwash people to become suicide bombers.

From some of the letters that were found at some of the immolation sites and immolated persons, it is evident that the LTTE hate Buddhism and Sinhalese deeply, and that the people who immolated themselves prominently cursed these two aspects. But unlike the Charnas and Rajputs of India, who are North Indian Aryans, it seems it is the first time that Dravidians that indulged in this practice of cursing through immolation to a significant level. So LTTE is yet again innovative in an unenviable way, in giving the Dravidians a foul name.

Now a rumor is spreading around that the LTTE leaders and its cadre entrapped in Wanni are going to commit suicide (by fire or otherwise). Fire has fascinated the first ape-men since they first started walking upright. So the death of these primitive LTTE terrorists too could very well be by fire. But I urge others LTTE supporters, especially the LTTE supporting diaspora not to get distracted by the LTTE efforts to play to the lower instincts of man. Think through your head, before setting yourself alight for a guy who thought only about himself. In addition this rumor is spread, I think, to encourage mentally forced self-immolation, especially targeting the oppressed masses of Tamil Nadu.

It is however very interesting to note that out of the three people who died so far, two are Indians from Tamil Nadu (the nationality of the person who died in Siwtzerland remain unknown). Sri Lankans are usually considered to be more educated than the Tamil Nadu Indians (literacy rate is higher in Sri Lankans than Tamil Nadu), and so it maybe harder to convince Sri Lankan Tamils to burn themselves for a lost cause. This is indeed an encouraging sign.

There are other reasons why self-immolation is a defeatist paradigm. Even from an evolutionary viewpoint, burning oneself is counter productive as one can't pass on ones genes to the next generation, or successfully raise ones children if they already have any. It is also known that, unlike in India, the Western society considers self-immolation as a problem to the society, and hence a crime. This is exemplified by the British Police charging the man who got half-burned in London, with arson. So getting fully or half-burned for Eelaam or Prabhakaran through self-immolation is, for many reasons, the silliest thing that one could do.

Finally anyway, thousands of Sri Lankan and Indian civilians and soldiers, including two heads of states (one from India and the other from Sri Lanka), who died by the fire of the LTTE suicide bombers will undoubtedly not object to the last few of these suicide cadres (or those who are closely associated with them) attaining death by fire, if they must (!), without dragging other innocents around them to go to the fiery hell hole with them.

Death by Fire – the Tigers’ End-Game

Author: Rover

After 30 years of self-destruction of its cadre with the intention of terrorizing innocent civilians by creating suicide bombers, LTTE is now encouraging self destruction of their remaining cadre in protest of being annihilated for being suicide bombers and terrorists! Seriously, how smart is this? Here I analyze generally why people resort to death by fire, the explicit message the LTTE is trying to convey by this, and the futility of this primitive practice.

People practice self-immolation for two major reasons: renouncement and devotion.

Renouncement: In the modern context, the most common form of self-immolation for renouncement is as a political protest. There are numerous cases of self immolation for renouncement that I won’t go into in detail here.

Devotion: The most famous example of self immolation for devotion is the archaic Hindu practice of Sati, where a new widow jumps into the burning pier of her dead husband.

Importantly, however there are two more reasons for death by fire, which are usually not much talked about. These are forced burnings and self-immolation for cursing.

Forced burnings - It is known that during the time of the historical Rus' people (mostly ancient Russians, Belarussians and Ukrainians) when a slave owner died, a loyal female slave was burnt with the master. In India, forced burnings of wives who didn’t want to perform Sati when their husbands died, are reported. In the west, infidels and witches were burned at a stake. This character is important in what I am going to talk in relation to the LTTE.

Several hardcore LTTE supporters and perhaps even former suicide cadre of the LTTE recently self-immolated. I am not going to mention any names or instances of these here, as this could be of propaganda value for the LTTE. Anyway, these protests were in support of the LTTE who is facing an imminent military annihilation at the hands of the Sri Lanka defense forces.

The LTTE self-immolations, I argue, are a combination for all the four reasons (renouncement, devotion, forced burning and self immolation for cursing). Through self-burning, LTTE cadre also show devotion to the cause (attaining Tamil Eelam) – it is well known that LTTE have a culture very much different from the other Dravidian Hindus. The true Tigers venerate their leader and the land they live instead of Hinduism, which they consider to be a para-desha concept; lack of respect for Hinduism is shown by the killing of Hindu priests, desecrating Hindu temples (The mayor of Jaffna, Alfred Duraiappa was killed by the Tiger leader at point blank inside a Hindu temple), and constant changes of their names (Eelam is now called Ezham, and Prabhakarana is called Paripaharan ect.). Interestingly, though normally Hindus prefer to cremate (burn) the bodies of their dead and float the resulting ashes in a sacred river, LTTE prefer to bury their dead so that they can build cemeteries that can later be glorified. I find this practice very interesting, as their organization is founded on the principles of glorifying the dead, as much as glorifying terrorism and violence (perhaps I will write a separate article on this practice later).

There is a enormous social pressure by the LTTE leadership to its members to protest in strongest possible terms; and this includes forced self-immolation. This has been prevalent throughout its history. One of the main reasons for the west to ban this organization was the harassment of the Diaspora by the LTTE (illegal taxation ect.). One might protest my third claim, but one must remember that LTTE is not a group of freedom fighters. From some of the letters that were found at some of the immolation sites, it is evident that the LTTE hate Buddhism and Sinhalese deeply, and that the people who immolated themselves prominently cursed these two factors. But unlike the Charnas and Rajputs of India, who are North Indian Aryans, it seems it is the first time that Dravidians that indulged in this practice to a significant level. So LTTE is yet again innovative in an unenviable way, in giving the decent Dravidians a foul name.

Smart extremists know when to give up

Author: Rover

Throughout history, various violent extremists have been in positions of power or have tried to achieve positions of power, but of these, the smarter ones knew when to give up, they knew when to strategize. Here I will take two examples to depict a success and failure, of two extremists, from our own region, and try to illustrate this point; while briefly describing the repercussions of these to Sri Lanka.

King Asoka (2nd century B.C.) inherited a huge kingdom through succession, from King Bindusara (his father) and king Chandragupta (his grandfather). Chandragupta’s Maurya kingdom extended from present day Afghanistan to Mysore (in India); some of the most Westerly parts of this kingdom were wrestled away from even one of Alexander the Great’s most ablest generals Seleucus, highlighting the Indian king’s adeptness at waging war. Asoka during his early tenure adopted an expansionist scheme, to further the borders of his Maurya kingdom; his greatest war was with the massive state of Kalinga (present day Orissa), a bloody battle that left thousands of civilians and soldiers dead.

Asoka’s war with Raja Padmanaphan (king of Kalinga) was thought to have been fought on the Dhauli hills that borders Daya river, and when the war ended, legend says that the river ran red from the blood of slain 100,000 Kalinga Deshis (civilians and soldiers) and 10,000 of Asoka’s soldiers. Nevertheless, this was a great triumph for Asoka as even his grandfather (Chandragupta) had not been able to annex the Kalinga desha, despite waging an earlier war. So king Asoka was a violent extremists, who went to extreme measures to annex a kingdom that his predecessors failed to win over. However, soon after the Kalinga war was won he changed completely; this was his culmination point (“Culmination point” is also a term that Clausewitz introduced, in his book “On War”).

Though Asoka had become a Buddhist just prior to the Kalinga war, he only became pious in this order after associating Sangha (Buddhist clergy). This association changed him completely and led to the formation of the FIRST Buddhist state in the world. He not only gave up violence, but encouraged other states (Antiochnus Syria, Ptolemy of Egypt, Antigonus of Macedon, Magas of Cyrene, Alexander of Epirus, Kingdom of Chola and Pandyans and Thambapanni – Ceylon or Sri Lanka) to do so. His system of morality is called Dharma (Dharma included ideas such as proper treatment and liberality towards relations, friends, gurus of other religions, companions, servants, poor and the unfortunate; gentleness, saintliness, devotion to morality; prevention of cruelty to animals; and moderation in spending ect.) and the formulation of Dharma helped Buddhism to become a universal religion. To make sure that Dharma reached all people, he formed Dharma Mahamatras (ministers) who spread the message. He also initiated Dharma Yatra, to visit far off places that were significant to Buddhists and Buddhism. He prohibited killing animals, especially on Buddhist Uposath days (full moon or Poya days). He also formed a welfare system for the people and beasts. All in all, he helped his own people and the whole world in general (especially Sri Lanka) by giving up his extremist ways and actively spreading the message of Dharma.

Velupillai Prabhakaran is also an extremist, but who didn’t know when to give up, and this has brought about his demise, together with the demise of the people that he aimed to represent. Unlike King Asoka, Prabhakaran does not have a succession worth speaking of, as a teenager he was an ordinary boy who extraordinarily dropped out of school (a high school dropout may sound like nothing much for a person living in the West, but it is a big deal for someone in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankans -both the Sinhala and Tamil people- care enormously about their education, this is what they strive to do more than anything else). Then he got interested in Tamil nationalistic politics and formed a violent organization called the Tamil New Tigers (1973) and later changed it to Liberation Tigers of the Tamil Eelaam (LTTE), these organizations he formed and nourished explicitly to fight for a small stretch of Sri Lanka which they call Eelaam; due to the unconventional tactics use in this fighting, LTTE is now infamous as a terrorist organization. His violent war with the Government of Sri Lanka (GSL) over the past 30 years has left more than 75,000 Sri Lankans dead.

The culminating point at which Praphabhakaran should have given up terrorism was when he signed the peace agreement (CFA – Cease Fire Agreement in year 2002) with Mr. Ranil Wickremasinghe (then prime minister of Sri Lanka, who is now the leader of the opposition). The CFA gave LTTE a vast area of land to rule, together with several other attractive perks (such as cessation of aerial bombardment and the naval, and right of self-administration, to name just a few, which the government didn’t gain anything out of, but yielded to the efforts of the LTTE). One of the modalities of the ceasefire is so ridiculous that I still sit down and think when I read it: “Modality 1.3 The Sri Lankan armed forces shall continue to perform their legitimate task of safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka without engaging in offensive operations against the LTTE.”. However, the Prabhakaran did not realize this, and did all he could to violate the CFA; not stopping at that, he actively used terrorists tactics to prevent a democratic election being held in Sri Lanka, resulting in the defeat of Ranil W. - this was Prabhakaran’s Waterloo.

Sometime after President Mahinda Rajapakse came into power, the LTTE actively engaged him into an all out war in 2007. However, the “unity of effort”(again a Clausewitz principle) between the political entity and the armed forces led to the defeat of the LTTE, which is as I write is restricted to a very small area in Wanni. The whereabouts of LTTE chief remains unknown and it is believed that he may have fled to another country.

The people under the LTTE also suffered much; and in general Sri Lanka’s economy also didn’t do as well as it should have perform. The brief respite the civilians of Wanni had under the CFA was soon over and Prabhakaran did all that he could to terrorize the civilians (taxation, forced recruitment for military and other duties, use as human shields, use as suicide bombers and to support their operations, ect.). All this happened because the LTTE supporting Tamil diaspora put all their eggs in the Velupillai Prabhakaran basket. A basket that held an illiterate, bigoted imbecile, who did not know that he had already got what he had been fighting for, several years ago!

In conclusion, a smart Indian king (who was once an extremist) enormously helped Sri Lanka in defining its moral and spiritual background while a bigoted mindless extremist fool of a Sri Lankan has pulled us all down into a pit where it will be hard for us to clamor out of.
